In the center the massive wall of a classical ruin lapped by water frames the dedication of Canaletto’s thirty-one etchings to Joseph Smith, the English Consul at Venice : « VEDUTE / Altre prese da i Luoghi altre ideate / DA / ANTONIO CANAL / e da esso intagliate poste in prospetiva / umiliate / All’ Ill.mo Signor / GIUSSEPPE SMITH / Console di S. M. Britanica appresso la Ser.ma / Repubblica di Venezia / In segno di stima ed ossequio. / » At right, the central figure sits on stone steps leading up from the lagoon and points towards the dedication. In the distance beyong the wall, a house with « altana » (open terrace), and a partially visible dome, pyramid and column surmounted by a statue. Lower right, an architectural fragment.This plate is in addition to the 31 etchings which were published either singly or bound in books, 3 additional etchings exist. At Windsor are preserved the only known impressions of the « Fragment of a Bishop’s Tomb, Landscape with a Church, Houses and mill », and the first state of « Alpine Landscape with Church, Houses and two Pillars ». Of the latter, the only known impression of the second state is preserved at Berlin-Dahlem.
