VAN MERLEN Theodor

Family of engravers and publishers, active in Antwerp and Paris. There were three men called Theodoor van Merlen; no attempt is made in the BM to distinguish between them, following Hollstein which combines them. There were two branches of the family in Antwerp, stemming from two brothers:
(a) Theodoor (c.1600-1659), who died in poverty
(b) Abraham (1578-1660), pupil of Collaert, member of guild in 1620, successful and wealthy.
Abraham’s sons included:
(a) Theodoor (II) (1609-1672), who was the father of Theodoor (III) and Cornelis, both of who married a daughter of the publisher Huberti
(b) Jacques (qv) (1616-82) who moved to Paris and worked as a print dealer (apparently he never engraved)
